Linlithgow Palace

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Linlithgow Palace From the north-west, beside the loch, this view shows the newest parts of the palace, built by the Stuart kings of Scotland. Built on the site of an older building, probably a fortified mansion, the building was James I's 'pleasure palace' a retreat from the political intrigues of Edinburgh or Stirling. It was gradually completed by later Stuart monarchs, with James VI making the last additions after he became King of England. It was largely empty thereafter, and burnt down in 1746 as the Georgian army passed through.
